Betony (Stachys officinalis) A sturdy, easy perennial for a wildflower meadow or border. It produces short spikes of vibrant, rosy-purple orchid-like flowers throughout summer and autumn; very attractive to pollinators. It needs winter cold to germinate so seed is best sown in autumn, 1cm deep either in pots with moist compost or direct where they are to flower. If sown indoors spring, place in a fridge for 2-3 weeks first. Grow in a sunny spot in well-drained soil.
