Would you like to learn the art of scything? It is an eco-friendly, fun way of cutting hay, clearing scrub and even mowing the lawn! The aim of this course is to teach you what you need to know to get you mowing. It is an ideal beginning before you buy your first scythe or to improve your technique if you already have one. The course is very hands-on and there will be plenty of chance to practice. The course takes place on Plantlife’s beautiful Cae Blaen Dyffryn reserve. We will start by looking at how to set up a scythe so that it will work well for you and then have a go at mowing part of the reserve. After lunch we will cover the all important job of keeping your blade sharp and cutting well, including the art of peening, before trying some more mowing.
The course will be delivered by Phil Batten of Scythe Cymru is being subsidised by the Welsh Government. The course will be delivered on Thursday 24th August and then repeated on Saturday 26th August. All equipment will be provided. For more information on scything please visit www.scythecymru.co.uk.
