When: Wednesday 27 September, Start time: 9.45am

Our 2017 members' day will be held in the beautiful Royal Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire and will have a wonderful woodland theme. It is one of England’s few remaining ancient forests and covers 27,000 acres of woodland with an estimated 20 million trees. We will be exploring the woodland, including Speech House Oaks SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), looking at some of the ancient and veteran trees of the forest and hearing about the schemes to enhance biodiversity and help manage eco-systems.

There will be a series of talks in the morning, held at Forest Hills Golf Club in Coleford. Our speakers on the day will be:

Prof. David Hill CBE, Plantlife Chairman and owner/founder of The Environment Bank Ltd which he established to promote investment into nature and natural capital. He is also a founding member of Natural England and its Deputy Chair since 2011, and a board member of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).

Dr George Peterken OBE, Formerly woodland ecologist for the Nature Conservancy and successor bodies, but latterly an amateur meadow enthusiast in retirement. Initiator of the ancient woodland inventory and Author of Woodland Conservation and Management, Natural Woodland, Wye Valley (New Naturalist) and Meadows (British Wildlife Collection).

Paul Rutter, Inspired by trees Paul has enjoyed a long career in countryside management. This has Included  wildlife research, managing and restoring protected sites, 20 years with the National Trust and for the last 5 years as Woodland Adviser for Plantlife, advising and encouraging woodland owners on how to enhance biodiversity in their woodland.

Marian Spain, Plantlife’s Chief Executive, will present an overview of the year, our successes and upcoming projects.

After lunch, there will be time to walk through Speech House wood, with Plantlife experts providing information on the woodland plants. During the day there will be the opportunity to meet the staff team, ask them questions and buy merchandise so please do bring some cash on the day if you would like to purchase anything.

A schedule for the day will be sent out to all attendees prior to the event along with a map and directions to the venue. If you have any questions, please do let us know - email or call Rebecca James on 01722 342756.
