Common Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) Needing little introduction, this much-loved annual provides a profusion of scarlet flowers in summer. Sow seed in spring or autumn directly into the soil where plants are to flower, either in shallow drills covered lightly with soil or scattered over a seed bed and raked in. Loves an open sunny spot and well-drained soil.
